This simply makes perfect sense… I’m definitely adding the “rough mix” to my workflow.
For a quick mix, all I am looking at doing at this stage is a quick volume balance and a bit of panning. I like to turn the volume up nice and loud and quickly adjust volume levels as I would if I was mixing the band live, getting a rough mix that has a lot of energy and gives a good feel for what the song is about. You will be surprised at how often this rough mix sets the tone for the final product.
